Dozens of firefighters battle huge farm blaze

DOZENS of fire-fighters were last night battling a blaze at a farm after 400 tonnes of straw and chemicals went-up in flames.

Appliances were called to the inferno at Kennetsideheads Farm near Eccles, Roxburghshire, yesterday (Sunday) morning at 9.30am, with 11 appliances fighting the flames at one point.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but the damage to the dairy farm is thought to be extensive.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: “We had a couple of calls reporting the fire including the farmer himself.

“Even as the engines were arriving they could see it was well alight.“We still have six fire engines there along with the command support unit and the incident support unit, we also have senior officers in attendance and the fire is still ingoing.

“Eight different stations have been involved in the blaze throughout today and at one crossover point we did have 11 vehicles at the scene.

“We have switched over crews to relieve the crews who have been there all day.

“The blaze has involved agricultural buildings and 400 tonnes of straw.

“There are a range of agricultural buildings involved in the fire and the main building is completely ablaze.

“There were also chemicals in the barn – caustic soda and a substance called urea, but they didn’t have any real involvement in the fire.

“The blaze is now under control but I’m predicting that we’ll be there this evening and tonight.”
