Former Celtic striker Tony Watt is planning to use his Cardiff loan switch to prove he is more than a one-hit wonder after admitting he is desperate to move on from his fairytale strike against Barcelona.
The Scotland Under-21 cap made his debut for the Bluebirds in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley after joining from Charlton on a temporary deal until January.
And the 21-year-old hopes to write a new chapter in his career after conceding that he is fed up of being reminded about that famous goal against the Catalan giants in the 2012 Champions League.
Watt said: “I don’t think I’ve had an interview without being asked about that goal.
“It’s my boyhood club and I scored a massive goal for them but that’s three years ago now.
“That’s more than half my professional career – it’s probably three times my professional career.
“I just want to prove I can do it elsewhere and this is a massive club so hopefully I can do it here.
“It would be good to focus everybody’s attention away from that goal.”
Watt, who has notched three goals in 15 appearances for Charlton this term, is keen to prove to Cardiff manager Russell Slade that he is worth a longer deal at the Welsh club.
He added: “I want to be here as long as I can. I wouldn’t have come if I didn’t have any ambitions beyond the eight weeks. I want to cement a place.
“We want to fight to go up and a team like Cardiff deserve to be in the Premier League.
“I looked at the table before I came and the play-off spots are not far away. Hopefully we can push on.
“I have got thoughts of staying beyond the loan. Hopefully I can score goals here.”
