St Mirren Steven Thompson: ‘We’re not contemplating relegation dogfight’

BY DARREN JOHNSTONE @CCP_Sport

St Mirren captain Steven Thompson insists the Buddies are refusing to even consider the prospect of being dragged into a relegation dogfight.

Following a third successive loss against Hibs on Saturday, Ian Murray’s side are only above the Championship relegation play-off place on goal difference and are five points clear of basement outfit Alloa.

But experienced striker Thompson insists the Paisley club, who have won two out of their opening 13 league matches, have their sights firmly on finishing in the play-offs.

Speaking to the BBC, Thompson said: “Fighting against relegation is not something the players are thinking about, we’re trying to get up the league.

“I don’t think (relegation) is a possibility.

“With the squad we have got I would say that we will be climbing the league and we have a perfect opportunity to do that a week on Friday when Morton come in the Renfrewshire derby.

“When you look at the table you have to be realistic and say, ‘where we are is not good enough’.

“The performances have not been at the level they should be at.

“We’re really struggling at home, we just haven’t found any form at home whatsoever.

“We’re losing poor, cheap avoidable goals and probably not creating enough either.

“When all these things are put together then the confidence of the players suffers as well.

“But we need to pick ourselves back up and need to start climbing this league. The sooner the better.”
