Bobby Willliamson has been forced to drop a player from his Kenya squad – because he cannot prove his nationality.
The former Hibs and Kilmarnock manager initially called-up Gor Mahia midfielder Innocent Wafula for next month’s crucial World Cup qualifying double header against Cape Verde.
But after Wafula, who was born in Uganda, failed to produce the relevant documents that would confirm whether he is eligible to play for the Harambee Stars, Scots manager Williamson has axed him from his squad.
Williamson, who has included former Celtic Victor Wanyama, said: “We asked him to prove to us that he is a Kenyan but he is yet to do it.
“It is taking longer than we expected and therefore, is not part of the team anymore.”
Kenya team manager Willis Waliaula said: “We are waiting for Wafula to verify his documents when he returns from Kisumu.
“He told us he doesn’t have a passport but he is a Kenyan so unless we confirm, we cannot risk calling him in the team.”
