A SCOTS Granny aged 92 has been entertaining Cancun clubbers by dancing in a cage 30 feet above the ground.
92-year-old Flora Murray, from Dundee, performs a line dance routine every year at the Coco Bongo nightclub in Mexico.
The grandmother, who was a teenager at the outbreak of the Second World War and grew up listening to Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, was first noticed by the manager over five years ago.
He was so transfixed by her moves that he he asked her to dance in a cage high off the ground – and now she makes an annual appearance at the “world famous” clubbing hotspot.
The sprightly pensioner, who now lives in America, first took up line dancing in her 60s.
She broke out some of her moves on a holiday in Cancun with some friends – a decision which proved extremely popular with holidaymakers and club owners alike.
Describing the first time she visited the Coco Bongo nightclub, she said: “The stage was way up. I think it used to be a warehouse.
“They asked if anyone wanted to go up and meet the band, and we all went, but you had to go up steep steps.
“I was in my 80s at that time, and when the manager came to me he said ‘uh uh’.
“I thought maybe he was afraid I would fall, then he said, ‘I’ve been watching your moves. I’ve got a better place for you’ and that’s how I wound up in a cage 30ft off the ground.”
Every year since Flora and her friends have returned to the same club, where she resumes her place in the cage.
Despite her age, she insists nothing will hold back her love of dancing.
“It’s no problem,” she added. “I like everything like country and western, and jazz dancing.
“When my friends joined line dancing we used to go to festivals together.”
Her daughter, Linda Murray-Booy, who was visiting Dundee with her mother this week, said: “She had a fall a while ago and the first thing she asked her doctor was ‘will I still be able to dance in the cage at Coco Bongo?”
Unfortunately, the doctor replied: “Not this year.”
The Coco Bongo nightclub is a popular spot for spring break party-goers, and regularly hosts pool parties and sell-out shows.
Photos and videos of the huge venue show packed-out dance floors, party poppers and bottles of champagne.
A TripAdvisor description reads: “Weave your way through crowds of half-naked and thoroughly inebriated college kids and dance the night away to pulse-pumping, eardrum-throbbing rhythms.”
Flora first left Dundee as a ‘war bride’ after meeting her first husband, an American marine, in a local dancehall.
Aged just 21, she moved to America and had a son, Leland, but the marriage did not work out.
She met her second husband, William Murray, after being asked to deliver a letter to him on behalf of a friend, and they married in 1951.
Flora now works as an airport ambassador in Livonia, Michigan, and also helps out at the Scottish Games.
