Near disaster as van man overtakes four vehicles

A HEARTSTOPPING video shows an impatient van overtake at least four vehicles before narrowly avoiding a head-on crash with a car and lorry.

Dashcam images show the driver of the silver transit van speeding past at least three cars and a tractor on a narrow rural road.

The driver manages manages to pull back in with “inches” to spare during the incident early on Tuesday morning on the A879 in East Dunbartonshire.

The film, obtained by website Scotland’s Worst Drivers, was recorded on two cameras – one dashcam camera and one rear-facing camera – by a motorist patiently waiting for a safe moment to overtake a tractor.

From the rear window of the car a van can be seen overtaking the queue of four cars – forcing them to slow and pull to the side to let him pass in time.

The van just manages to make it past the queue – missing a head-on collision with oncoming traffic by seconds.

The car and HGV in the oncoming lane also have to slow to allow the van to pass in time – and the driver of the car can be seen flashing his lights in anger at the cavalier driver of the van.

Steve Harvey, the driver of the camera car said: “It caused the driver of the car coming the other way to stop completely.

“Lucky for him the truck was not the first one coming his way as it might not have been able to stop in time.

“Must have been inches between the oncoming car and the van!”

Steve Jackson, a driving instructor for Compass ProDrive added: “A classic case of impatience getting the better of the driver, he was very lucky to avoid a serious collision.

“Country roads often throw up some very irresponsible driving.”
