Hearts owner Ann Budge has paid tribute to the “astounding” generosity of a supporter who bequeathed the Foundation of Hearts (FoH) a staggering £108,725 in his will.
The fan, who passed away at the age of 93 last year, asked to remain anonymous but his wish was for the six-figure sum to go to “an organisation which promoted the aims and objectives of Heart of Midlothian Football Club”.
It was decided by those responsible that the money should go to the FoH, the supporters group which already boasts over 8,000 paying members and aims to take control of the club by 2019.
FoH chairman Brian Cormack has confirmed that the bequest will be handed over to the football club, and Budge has vowed that it will be used in an appropriate manner.
Budge said: “This was a truly wonderful gesture from someone who clearly had deep affection for the club and believed in the values on which this club has been built and again aspires to promote and stand by.
“I would like to extend my very sincere thanks for this bequest. Given its background and its significance, we will take time to establish an appropriate way to make best use of these funds and will make an announcement shortly on this.
“We are – as ever – astounded by the generosity and commitment of the fans of this club.”
Cormack, who took the reins of the FoH earlier this summer after Ian Murray MP stepped down from the role, was similarly humbled.
Cormack said: “This was an amazing, heart-warming gesture by this gentleman.
“On behalf of all Foundation members, I would like to say how very touched we are by this supporter’s generosity. It means a huge amount to the Foundation and, of course, the club.
“It is another powerful reminder of the love that supporters have for Hearts and the lengths they go to in order to help the club prosper.”
