UK teachers could be receiving gifts worth a total of £77m from generous UK parents as a thank you for teaching their children this year, according to a survey.
Research from discount retailer The Works has revealed that teachers are in line for a summer gift bonanza as parents dig deep as a thank you gesture in recognition for their work throughout the year.
More than three quarters of parents (76%) admit to buying presents for teachers at the end of the school term to say thank you, spending an average of £10-£20 per teacher.
A generous 22% have splashed out £15 or more for their teacher and it’s estimated that teachers walk away with £300 worth of gifts at the end of term
As part of the survey teachers revealed some of their best and worst presents.
One said: “One of the strangest presents I received was a nose ring. Very nice – only I didn’t have my nose pierced.”
Another added: “One year I received a beautiful pen with the name Janice inscribed on it – my name is Katie.”
While the tradition shows no sign of waning, it appears that nearly half of parents (43%) feel pressured into purchasing gifts.
