THE University of St Andrews is to launch its own record label.
The 600 year old university will officially launch its Sanctiandree label during a student arts festival in the town on Monday.
Its first CD will include a previously unheard work by composer William Jackson of Exeter, which was found in university archives last year.
Sanctiandree takes its name from a document dating from the earliest days of the University, which describes students who sang at services as “Choristi Sanctiandree”.
Sancti Andree is Latin for St Andrews.
The CD is called Salvator Mundi – The Purcell Legacy and includes a university choir and string quartet.
The label will launch with a free concert at St Salvator’s Chapel on the town’s North Street on April 12 at 7.30pm.
Festival
It will feature as part of the “On the Rocks” student arts festival in the Fife town.
University organist Tom Wilkinson said: “I am absolutely delighted to be launching the label.
“The quartet is superb, and the chapel choir and I are greatly looking forward to performing with them again at the launch concert.
“The CD begins with a wonderful work by Pelham Humfrey, a teacher of Henry Purcell, and charts a history of seventeenth and eighteenth-century composers associated with the Chapel Royal.
“It finishes with the world premiere recording of a work by William Jackson of Exeter, which I discovered in the University Special Collections last year.”
The CD will be available from Friday.
