Barry Ferguson to feel long arm of the law

By ALEXANDER LAWRIE

TROUBLED former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson could be about to feel the full force of the law – when his missus joins up as a local community bobby.

Mum-of-three Margaret Ferguson is currently in training for her new job as a Special Constable in the couple’s hometown of Bothwell.

But Fergie’s wife’s new career could be in doubt before she completes her training as Barry is widely expected to make a career move down south.

The Glasgow giants midfielder, who faces the exit from Ibrox after the Boozegate scandal, is thought to be a £1 million target of West Bromich Albion.

Margaret’s new duties would include guarding crime scenes, house-to-house inquiries and policing football matches in the Strathclyde area.

The 31 year-old will face the same grueling training as other recruits and will have the same powers of arrest as fully-qualified coppers.

Giving something back to community

The position is a voluntary one, but her expenses will be covered and if she works at least 180 hours over the next year she will qualify for a £1000 service bonus.

A family friend said: “It’s a strange step for Margaret, but she feels like she wants to give something back to the community.

“It’s an admirable thing to do. She’ll be right on the front line of community policing – it won’t be a walk in the park, that’s for sure.”

The shamed footballer hit the headlines earlier this year when he and Gers teammate Alan McGregor were banned for life after a marathon booze session at Cameron House in the build-up to Scotland’s World Cup qualifier with Iceland.
And the pair compounded the blunder by sticking two fingers up at photographers as they sat on the Hampden bench after being dropped.
Earlier this year Fergie bought his missus the award-winning nursery, Clyde Valley Kindergarten in Lanark.

The ex-Scotland captain also splashed out on the Popinjay Hotel, Rosebank, for a reported £2 million.

A spokesperson for Strathclyde Police said: “The personal details of all our Special Constables are confidential, so we cannot comment.”
