A PINT-sized pub opened its doors for business yesterday (tue), claiming to be Scotland’s smallest watering hole.
The Edinburgh bar is so tiny it would fit four times into the six-yard box on a football pitch.
The Wee Pub in the city’s popular Grassmarket has room for a maximum of 20 drinkers – assuming they are all standing up.
At just 17ft by 14ft (5.2m by 4.5m) there is no room for normal seats but there are three bus stop-style benches for drinkers to perch on.
Tables are also in short supply with only three narrow, tall standing tables in the pub, so standing drinkers can easily set their drinks down.
There is not even room for a conventional bar, meaning that customers are served from a small drinks cabinet.
Despite that, the designers have pulled off a Tardis-like miracle with their drinks selection, offering 80 whiskies and three draught beers.
The drinks menu is printed on a postcard and comes with a handy magnifying glass so customers can read through their options.
Anyone who might be worried that the bar may be a little claustrophobic for them, need not worry as a floor to ceiling glass window has been installed to make sure customers do not feel too cramped.
It may be small on size but manager Brian O’Poole is confident the atmosphere will win over pub lovers.
He said: “The Wee Pub may be the smallest pub in Scotland, but we believe size isn’t everything.
“It might not be big, but it will have huge amounts of atmosphere and loads of banter.”
The Nutshell in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, is the smallest pub in England. The bar measures just 7ft by 15ft and holds the title in the Guinness World Records.
