SCOTTISH Borders Police are trying to identify a mystery cyclist who died after colliding with a car.
The man, aged between 40 and 50, lost control of his bicycle and veered into the southbound carriageway of the A703 Edinburgh to Peebles Road, 300 metres north of Peebles.
It is believed he became unwell before crashing his bike into a Fiat Panda car.
The road was closed for around three and a half hours while collision investigation and vehicle recovery took place.
The incident happened at around 4.20pm on Monday August 6.
Witnesses administered first aid until emergency services arrived, however he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cyclist is described as being a male between 40 – 50 years old using a red and white Peugeot racing bike. He was wearing a yellow jacket, blue and yellow cycle top, and black cycling shorts.
Sergeant Brian Jones from Lothian and Borders Police Road Policing Branch said: “This was a terribly sad incident which has left a man dead and a number of witnesses greatly affected.
“There may be someone out there who recognises the description of this cyclist and I would appeal to them to come forward as a matter of urgency.
“Similarly I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward – they may have vital information that could greatly assist us in establishing the full circumstances.”
A Scottish Ambulance Spokeswoman added: “The first call came from a passer by that a male on a pushbike and a car had collided.
“The push bike appeared to have slipped off the road and collided with the car.
“We dispatched two vehicles and a local GP from Peebles was called to the scene.
“The patient was given CPR and was not in a good state.
“At 16.25 he was declared deceased.
“Someone else on the scene was treated for shock.”
