Jane McCarry shows she’s still game for Steamie role

STILL Game actress Jane McCarry is to take to the stage in a 25th anniversary tour of stage play The Steamie.

The actress, who played busy-body Isa Drennan in the Glasgow-based series, will be turned into another Glaswegian gossip when she takes on the role of Dolly.

She will be joined by another actress featured in the series as Kay Gallie is set to play Mrs Culfeathers.

Kay Gallie, who acted alongside Jane McCarry in Still Game, will play Mrs Culfeathers

The play’s author, Tony Roper, will direct the production, which starts on March 21.

This new touring production features live music composed by David Anderson with design by Kenny Miller.

The play depicts Hogmanay in a Glasgow wash house, and the girls need to get their washing done before the bells.

Roper said:“In my late forties I sat down with a biro and a jotter and wrote my first ever play. 25 years have since passed and The Steamie is still there, giving laughter and tears and touching that intangible something in an audience that has made it a favourite night out.

“My gratitude to all the actors, designers, directors and audiences over that quarter century who have made it happen. I am looking forward immensely to working with the marvellous and talented team in this production who will take it forward into the next 25 years.”

After having The Steamie rejected by virtually every theatre company in the play was then taken up by Elaine C Smith and Wildcat Stage Productions and it was first performed at Jordanhill College in Glasgow on 1 May 1987.

It has gone on to become one of the most popular Scottish plays and was filmed for Channel 4 for New Year’s Eve in 1988.
