THE Scottish SPCA is appealing to animal lovers to consider giving a rescue pet a second chance as part of its Rehoming Week.
Scotland’s animal welfare charity aims to raise awareness of the benefits of taking on an unwanted, abandoned or neglected animal during Rehoming Week, which takes place from 19 – 25 March.
In 2011 the charity found new homes for almost 6,500 animals from its animal rescue and rehoming centres across Scotland, ranging from dogs, cats and rabbits to other pets such as terrapins, bearded dragons, horses and cockerels.
Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, “We are currently caring for a large number of animals, many of which have had a tough start in life.
“It’s heartbreaking to think about, but some of them don’t even know what it feels like to be part of a loving family.
“We rehomed thousands of animals last year and we expect 2012 to be just as busy.
“Because we don’t put any healthy animals to sleep we are always full of wonderful animals looking for a fresh start.
“All animals are vet checked before leaving our care and every dog and cat is microchipped and neutered.”
Chief Supt. Flynn added, “We find new homes for animals throughout the year but Rehoming Week is our chance to remind people that rescue pets have so much to offer.
“Of course, taking on any animal is a huge responsibility and potential owners must have the time, commitment and resources available to provide for the needs of a pet, including paying for any vet bills required.
“We would never encourage impulsive rehoming, however, anyone thinking of getting a pet is very welcome to come along to our centres to meet our fantastic animals for themselves.”
