PICTURE SPECIAL: Filth in Edinburgh streets

STAR James McAvoy was joined by author Irvine Welsh on the set of Filth, the filmĀ adaptationĀ of one of his novels.

McAvoy has been cast in the starring role of the film, a corrupt cop called Bruce Robertson.

During filming in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket street today (wed), the author made a surprise visit to the set.

Speaking briefly to the press, he said the filmĀ adaptationĀ of his novel was ‘marvellous.’

He chatted to McAvoy, who was filming a scene with someone playing a down-and-out wearing a Santa hat.

The novel Filth was released in 1998, and the film is due to be released later this year.

Parts of the street were closed off to the public as the crew shots scenes of McAvoy.

The actor has previously said taking on the role is ‘the biggest risk’ of his career.

He reached international fame with his starring role in The Last King of Scotland.

The novel Filth is considered separate from theĀ best-sellingĀ Trainspotting, though is set in the same dark world of Edinburgh’s criminal underbelly.

The 1996 film Trainspotting, based on Welshā€™s novel became a cult sensation.
