Police crackdown on wildlife crime

The initiative will highlight problems caused when marine animals, such as whales, dolphins and porpoises, are disturbed.

TWO Scottish police forces have teamed up to launch a crackdown on wildlife crime.

Grampian Police and Northern Constabulary have joined together to help raise awareness on the problems caused when marine animals, such as whales, dolphins and porpoises, are disturbed.

Grampian Police wildlife crime unit will hand out 30,000 information cards and display posters designed to help people recognise and report wildlife crime.

Andy Turner, Grampian’s Wildlife Crime Education Officer, said: “By following the advice on the card the public can provide all of the necessary information for the police to deal with the crime in the most effective manner.”

Constable Gavin Lindsay has been appointed as the force’s new wildlife crime officer.

He said: “The effects of wildlife crime can be both damaging and long-lasting.

“This new role presents a challenge, but by continuing to work with partner agencies and the rural community I’m hopeful that we can turn the tide on wildlife crime in Grampian.”
