Man has jaw broken in homophobic attack

The man was attacked after leaving GHQ nightclub in Picardy Place

A MAN has suffered a broken jaw in an apparent homophobic attack in Edinburgh.

The 20-year-old was attacked after leaving GHQ nightclub at around 2.30am on Saturday.

While walking on nearby Broughton Street to get a taxi he passed a group of around four men and one woman.

While speaking to the victim, the group made some offensive comments before one man punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.

He returned home but later needed hospital treatment for a fractured jaw.

Suspects

Two of the group are described as being 18 or 19 years old. One was around 5ft 7, with a small built and light coloured hair. The other had black, spiky hair and was wearing a black zip-up top and white trousers.

Two other men were present, along with a female who is described as being around 18 or 19 with bleached blonde shoulder-length hair.

A police spokesman said: “This was a totally unprovoked and homophobic assault that has left the victim with a serious injury to his jaw.

“We believe a number of patrons from the various venues in and around Broughton Street may have been in the area and witnessed this incident and would urge anyone with information that can assist with our enquiries to contact police immediately.

“We would similarly urge the members of the group who did not become involved in the assault to come forward to officers and identify the culprit.”
