A Scots student designer is set to line up beside some of the world’s most famous fashion houses at this year’s Tartan Week celebrations in New York.
Becky Thomas, a second year graphic design student at Edinburgh Napier University, will see her dress design take centre stage at the renowned Dressed to Kilt fashion show next Tuesday (April 5).
She will join thousands of people, including A-list celebrities and 2,000 blazing Scottish pipers, taking to the NYC streets for the world’s biggest salute to Scottish fashion and culture outside of Scotland.
Becky (21), who was born and bred in the Capital, designed the dress for a competition run by the university’s School of Arts & Creative Industries.
She said: “I still can’t believe I’m heading off to New York in a matter of days. The whole experience has been a bit surreal, it feels like only a few days ago I was putting pen to paper and next week my design will be worn down the catwalk – it’s an amazing feeling!”
The vintage inspired, tutu dress is a giant leap from traditional tartan attire and epitomises this year’s Dressed to Kilt theme of ‘Country chic’.
The thigh-skimming outfit, similar to styles seen donning the catwalk at the 2011 Paris Spring/Summer fashion shows, has been made using thick layers of cream netting, adorned with individual flowers made from earthy toned tweeds, floral materials and the Edinburgh Napier tartan of red, black and blue. It will be accessorized with knee-high cream kilt socks and calf-high brown boots.
