A HOST of famous Fifers have thrown their backing behind the campaign to save RAF Leuchars.
Actor Dougray Scott, writers Ian Rankin and Val McDermid, singers The Proclaimers and Barbara Dickson and film director and producer Richard Jobson are among those joining the campaign to save the RAF base from closure.
It has been reported that if the base was to close it would have a huge impact on schools, small businesses and house prices in the area.
Almost 2000 jobs could be lost and council chiefs have warned that Fife’s economy would take a £60 million hit.
Dougray Scott said: “Having grown up in Fife I know how proud people are of the men and women stationed at RAF Leuchars, not only for the bravery they have displayed while in service overseas but for the contribution they make to the local community.
“The impact on Fife of closing the base would be extensive and long-term – it would affect jobs, schools, local services and community groups. I’m very pleased to give my support to the campaign to save RAF Leuchars.”
Ian Rankin said: “I grew up in Fife and have fond memories of attending the Air Show at RAF Leuchars as a kid. My brother-in-law was stationed at Leuchars for several years and I now have two nephews in the RAF.
“I know how much people value the base for the contribution it has made to the local community over the years. Closing it would be a huge blow to them and to Fife as a whole.”
Val McDermid added: “RAF Leuchars plays a distinctive role in the rich tapestry of the community of Fife. Its deep roots in local life give a strong sense of connection to service personnel, who come home from overseas assignments to a place where they can feel they belong.
“And in return, the base and those affiliated to it provide an important source for the local economy. It’s a symbiotic relationship that is vital to both sides. It would be a grievous loss to Fife and to the RAF if this base were forced to close”
Richard Jobson said: “I am 100% behind the campaign to save RAF Leuchars from closure.
“The contribution the base has made to making Fife a vibrant place to live, work and grow up in can’t be overstated.
“The base and those stationed at it have a long history of inspiring young people and creating a focus for community spirit. The closure of the base would be felt at every level in Fife.”
An announcement on whether the base will close is set to be made after the Scottish election in May.
Representing the “Residents Action Force for Leuchars”, Sir Menzies Campbell, in whose constituency of North East Fife RAF Leuchars is situated, said: “Getting the support of these Famous Fifers is a terrific boost in the fight to save RAF Leuchars and shows just how much people care about the base and those stationed at it.
“These are all household names who have never forgotten their roots.
“The support for the campaign has been overwhelming, with members of all parties and none, the Famous Fifers and local communities all pulling together to save the base. The case for RAF Leuchars is overwhelming.”
Chair of the campaign group Residents Action Force (RAF) Leuchars, Fraser Phillips of Fife Economic Partnership commented: “There is much support for the case to keep the RAF in Leuchars. We are a motivated group, inspired to do all we can to ensure our voices are heard by the UK MOD and Treasury.
“We know that there are many voices of support out there and we intend to rally them into action.”
