Lorry driver survives being thrown 30 feet after crash

By Rory Reynolds

A DRIVER has survived a freak accident which saw him thrown through the windscreen of his lorry at 50mph.

The man, who is in his late-30s, was driving a HGV when it jack-knifed after skidding on snow.

He was thrown through the windscreen of the lorry, landing 30 feet down an embankment.

According to paramedics the man hit two trees on the way down, before coming to a standstill.

Miraculously he escaped with just a broken leg, and was last night been treated at Stirling Royal Infirmary.

The accident happened on the M876 near Banknock, Stirlingshire at around 3.30am yesterday.

Ejected

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We had reports from police of a lorry driver in his late 30s involved in a road traffic accident on the M80 near Banknock.

“The driver had been ejected from the vehicle, which was travelling at 50mph and thrown 20-30 feet down an embankment.

“I believe he hit two trees on the way down.

“He was taken to Stirling Royal Infirmary complaining of leg and chest pains.

“It was pretty miraculous that he survived, and was still conscious when paramedics found him.”

A spokesman for Central Scotland Police said: “At 3.30am we got reports of a road traffic accident on the M876.

Condition

“We had a lorry which had left the carriageway due to snow.

“The driver was thrown from the cab and suffered a fracture leg.

“The road remained closed until 7.30am.”

Staff at the WH Malcolm haulage firm, which the man worked for, confirmed that it was one of their drivers, but said they hadn’t had any further update on his condition.
