THE Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) scrambled to respond to a fire on the busy M8 this morning.
The emergency services were called just after 7am to attend the scene between Newbridge and Hermiston Gait just outside of Edinburgh, where an HGV had gone up in flames.
The fire resulted in a lengthy fight with crews battling the blaze for around an hour before the flames were eventually put out at 8:16am.
Whilst the incident resulted in delays, prompting widespread images and videos taken by passersby, fire crews were done and dusted and left the scene by 8:30am.
It is unclear at this time what started the blaze on the motorway and the condition of the driver has not been disclosed.
Images caught by commuters passing the burning lorry were captured and shared on social media early this morning.
They show the inferno engulfing the front end of the HGV pulled over on the side of the road as firefighters rush to tackle the blaze.
At least one fire engine can be seen in the images parked alongside the burning lorry, pumping water through hoses.
Images were shared with the caption: “Edinburgh bypass just now lorry on fire.”
The posts have received over a dozen comments and a slew of likes from social media users.
One user clarified: “M8 not bypass. Newbridge to Hermiston.”
Speaking today, a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7:02am on Friday, February 7 to reports of an HGV on fire on the eastbound carriageway of the M8 just prior to junction two.
“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting one HGV.
“One casualty was in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
