A GROUP termed “Free Calton Hill” has been calling for free access to the hill, after gates were closed in December last year.
They say that there is no way for people to reach the top if they are unable to climb the steep steps, whereas driving was possible before the gates closed.
The Calton Hill Conservation Trust confirmed that the council decided to indefinitely lock one gate of the access barrier last month so that unauthorised motor vehicles were unable to enter.
The trust had called for the gate to be closed to reduce traffic on the hill, making it safer for visitors and the surroundings.
Free Calton Hill posted on social media yesterday saying: “News reached us today of a new development.
“Edinburgh City Council have literally padlocked the gate to Calton Hill.
“There is no disabled access to the hill. It threatens jobs on the hill.
“Why? Because the self-appointed Calton Hill Conservation Trust wish to make it their private garden.”
The Calton Hill Conservation Trust has retaliated today, saying: “Disabled access to Calton Hill is a priority for the trust.
“We have ongoing discussions with Edinburgh City Council and the Edinburgh Access Panel about improvements — at entrances, paths and toilets. For your information.”
They went on to say: “Specifically: months ago we suggested a dedicated entry point for wheelchair users (+pedestrian/cyclists) and a fast automatic entry system for authorised vehicles, including Blue Badges at the foot of Calton Hill Drive.
“Plus upgrading toilets for accessibility.”
The trust originally asked for the gates to be closed in July last year, referencing that council policy is against allowing general traffic in parks and that despite being open for years, Calton Hill Drive should only be accessible by authorised vehicles.
They also stated: “The current unlimited vehicle access poses an unacceptable danger to pedestrians, particularly children, and wheelers.
“The lack of a safe footpath and limited space for passing vehicles further compounds these risks.
“Unauthorised vehicles, at all times of day and night, bring up items resulting in litter and anti-social behaviour.
“This includes food packaging, gas cylinders, amplifiers, fireworks, and even electric generators.
“The resulting noise pollution especially impacts local residents.”
They called for the council to close the gate no later than 1 October 2024.
A spokesperson for Free Calton Hill said today: “The gate was locked in December for the first time.
“Initially there was an entry system that people could buzz so long as Collective was open.
“Then they switched to a padlock with a code. Now they are switching to a key.
“So, in other words, no access to the hill for people who can’t walk up the very steep hill.”
Calton Hill is accessible by stairs on Regent Road, which lead up to a ramp.
