AYRSHIRE College and South Ayrshire Council’s Property Maintenance department have united to launch a new joinery work experience programme.
This initiative has been designed to foster a sustainable talent pipeline for the local joinery sector by strengthening the connection between education and industry while improving the employment opportunities of young people.
The programme was established through collaboration between Craig Pettigrew, carpentry and joinery lecturer at Ayrshire College, William Andrew (service lead) and AnneMarie Shirley (operational team leader) from South Ayrshire Council.
This venture allows the Ayrshire College carpentry and joinery students to gain practical experience by working alongside experienced joiners at Property Maintenance within the South Ayrshire Council.
Mhia Doolan, joinery student at Ayrshire College: “This work experience programme is an amazing opportunity to put what I’ve learned at the college into practice.
“Working alongside experienced joiners has taught me so much about the trade and the importance of being adaptable from problem-solving on-site to the importance of teamwork.
“It’s also helped me build the skills and experiences I need to help me secure an apprenticeship or a job after my course.”
A total of 16 students from Ayrshire College will participate in the programme, and each student will be paired with an experienced workplace mentor who will guide and support them throughout their placement.
This approach bridges the gap between college learning and the workplace, enriching students’ skill sets with current industry practices while instilling professionalism and a strong work ethic.

“By connecting students with hands-on experience in a professional setting, we are helping to equip them with the practical skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the joinery sector.
