Cyclists shocked at state of Meadowbank bike lane after segregation is “shunted” out of place

EDINBURGH commuters have warned other cyclists of a disrupted path in the Meadowbank area, after a division was “shunted” out of place.

The cycle lane on the busy London Road was previously separated from traffic by a series of concrete blocks filled with tarmac.

It appears that something has rammed into this blockage though, causing it to zig zag into the path and creating an obstacle for bike users.

The path seems to be damaged next to an existing bus lane, which means a bus may have been the source of the broken division.

One concerned local posted pictures of the wreckage to social media yesterday, saying: “Watch out when using the segregated bike lane on the westbound side of London Road opposite Meadowbank.

“Something large and heavy has shunted it, with the blocks now forming a zigzag and protruding into the bike lane.

“Sent to FixMyStreet for Edinburgh Council.”

South West Edinburgh 20 Minute Neighbourhoods, a group dedicated to promoting safe communities in the city, have previously drawn attention to this issue.

They emphasise the necessity for protected cycle paths, saying: “20-minute neighbourhoods need properly segregated cycle lanes, not paint.

“Paint is not protection. Here’s why.”

They then shared a picture of the path from a few weeks ago, where it had again been moved out of place.

The hashtag “PaintIsNotProtection” has been used around the world to implore councils to install divisions like the ones at Meadowbank to protect cyclists from vehicles.

Damage to the division shows the necessity for cycle paths to be segregated, especially next to bus lanes.

In 2019, GoBike, the Strathclyde Cycle Campaign, protested using the slogan “Paint is not protection” in order to ensure segregated bike lanes across Glasgow.

They achieved success for lanes on Byers Road after painting the slogan on roads and forming human chains along the bike lanes in the city.
