East Lothian schools to close amid Storm Éowyn safety fears

EAST Lothian’s schools are set to close amid fears of the havoc Storm Éowyn could wreak on the area.

Schools and nurseries in the region will be closed tomorrow on essential safety grounds, with the county covered by a Met Office red weather warning for wind from 10am to 5pm.

East Lothian Council made the announcement today, with the authority’s head of education Nicola McDowell writing to parents and carers informing them of the decision.

In her letter she said: “Dear parents and carers,

“I am writing to advise you that shchools will be closed on Friday 24 January 2025 on essential safety grounds.

East Lothian Council has made the move upon advice from the Met Office.

“The Met Office has advised us that East Lothian is covered by a red weather warning for wind tomorrow from 10am to 5pm.

“This means that very strong winds associated with Storm Éowyn will cause very dangerous conditions and significant disruption.

“They advise that people should avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous conditions and stay indoors if they can.

“This decision has been taken with the health and welfare of our children, families and staff in mind. Schools will reopen on Monday 27 January 2025.

“Your own school will be in touch with you with information on what remote learning will look like for your child tomorrow.

“Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”

East Lothian Council will be sharing information on its website and social media channels about the weather warning, impacts on services and Met Office advice on staying safe in high winds.
