SCOTS comedian and Netflix star Daniel Sloss has been popping up with impromptu gigs across Edinburgh this week.
After taking an eight-month break from performing, Sloss is now easing himself back into the stand-up scene to “work up new material” by frequenting small open mic nights across the city.
The 34-year-old is the creator of two comedy specials on Netflix which were released simultaneously as DARK and Jigsaw.
Despite his roaring success though, Sloss returned to his roots this week with an informal comedy night at The Stand on York Place – where he had his first ever stand-up gig – and The Beehive pub in Grassmarket.
Posting on social media, Daniel said: “I’ve had eight months off stage and have loved every goddamn second of doing absolutely nothing. It was bliss.
“Every single one of you who said ‘Oh you’ll miss it after a month. You’ll be pining for it’ can suck my incredibly fertile d**k.
“I could’ve stayed away for a decade. But my wife and children are bored of me now.
“They no longer get to complain that I’m never home. I haven’t heard the words ‘part time’ or ‘negligent father’ since May.
“So it’s time to get back to it. I’ll be working up new material around Scotland over the next few months.
“It’ll be s**t and I’ll hate myself for allowing the cobwebs to grow. That’s where art grows – in the pits of self-loathing.
“Anyway, genuinely lovely to return to comedy at the club and show that birthed me. I will always love The Stand and its staff.”
Daniel’s first stand-up gig was at The Stand when he was 17 and at 19, he became the youngest comedian to perform a solo season in London’s West End.
Daniel was also featured in the investigative Channel 4 documentary Russell Brand: In Plain Sight, where he was the only comedian to speak out about allegations of sexual harassment against Brand.
He has now released a third comedy special, HUBRIS, which was filmed at the Glasgow SEC and was his first post-pandemic event.
As well as The Stand, Daniel was also seen last night at Spandex, a comedy night above The Beehive Inn on Grassmarket, hosted by fellow comedian Ralph Brown.
Spandex is often frequented by big names wanting to test out new material on small crowds, with Danny Bhoy frequenting the event last year.
The sold-out show saw Daniel joined by James Nokise, Edinburgh local Robin Grainger, and Glasgow-based Paul McDaniel.
Daniel’s spokesperson said today: “Daniel really enjoyed getting back up at the Stand, which is very much his comedy home base and has supported him since he started off aged 17.”
