Officers investigating footage of motorist shockingly driving over four times the speed limit on 20mph residential street

EDINBURGH police officers are investigating shocking footage of a motorist driving more than four times the speed limit on a residential street.

The footage was captured by the driver who filmed themself speeding along Saughton Road North, a 20mph limit area, at speeds in excess of 80mph.

Driving what appears to be a Honda Civic, the motorist filmed themselves swerving in and out of traffic to overtake, before the clip was uploaded to social media on Monday.

The deathwish driving is being investigated by officers who were made aware of it after seeing the footage online themselves.

Pedestrians and other road users were lucky to avoid injury thanks to the driver’s joy ride, with police now attempting to identify the person behind the wheel.

Officers are urging anyone with information on the driver or the incident to come forward and assist them.

Police Scotland issued a statement on the incident yesterday, with constable Alexander Marshall, from the Edinburgh Road Policing Unit, giving comment.

He said: “This was an extremely irresponsible and reckless act, not only to be speeding at over 80mph in a 20mph zone, but to also use a mobile phone filming yourself while doing so.

“Putting the public at risk in such a manner will not be tolerated.”

“We are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the Honda Civic in question, or can help identify the driver, to please contact police on 101, quoting incident 0555 of 14 January, 2025.

“Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, if you wish to remain anonymous.”
