Works to be carried out in Holyrood Park, with path ascending Arthur’s Seat closed

WORKS on a footpath on the iconic Arthur’s Seat are due to be carried out with tonnes of stones left in bags near the world-famous hill.

Holyrood Park, home to the iconic hill, was left with tonnes of stones dumped in a work site over the weekend.

Dozens of large white bags filled with the red stones used to pave paths in the park were left in a fenced-off area of the green space over the weekend.

They are due to be used along a path in the park leading up Arthur’s Seat in works carried out to maintain footpaths in the area.

The work on the path will end on the 17th. (C) Reddit.

The path will be closed from the 14-17 January while works are carried out, with rangers from Historic Environment Scotland set to guide walkers along alternative routes in the meantime.

The works will see the High Road and sections of the hillside above closed.

While works are being prepared, a huge number of stones were brought into the park, fenced off and left over the weekend.

They were spotted yesterday by a local passing through the area who snapped a picture of the bags of stones and shared it to social media.

They wrote below the snap: “Maintenance? Does anyone know what they’re fixing/maintaining up at Holyrood Park? There’s lots of bags full of stones, curious.”

It has since received dozens of likes and comments from social media users who were quick to offer an explanation.

One wrote: “The western path up to Nether Hill (highlighted in blue in image below) has a sign marking it as ‘closed’ at the moment.

“[I] Assume the bags of stone will be dropped in here.”

Another replied: “There are an awful lot of footpaths. They’ll be helicoptered up the hill, so expect a post asking what a helicopter is doing in the park in a week or so.”

A third joked: “Nice to see they were able to round up the escaped flock of ‘Beatson’s’ that have been terrorising the walkers around Arthur’s Seat.”
