Police called as Deliveroo riders launch impromptu delivery-halting protest after restaurant staff allegedly treated them poorly

POLICE officers were called as Deliveroo riders launched an impromptu delivery-halting protest after restaurant staff allegedly treated them poorly.

A crowd of Deliveroo riders decided to halt any potential takeaway deliveries yesterday after staff at Wingstop on Piccadilly Road in Manchester supposedly mistreated them.

A backlog of orders and soaring delivery fees ensued as demand for food from the restaurant rose – but with no-one available to deliver it.

Police eventually attended the scene with the protest growing in size as more and more riders arrived, reportedly demanding respect from staff at the restaurant before they would deliver anything.

Video footage captured by pedestrians shows a crowd of delivery workers outside the busy restaurant.

The Deliveroo workers gather in a huddle discussing amongst themselves as two Wingstop staff members negotiate with them.

Video of the protest was shared to social media yesterday with the caption: “Nobody picking up orders from Wingstop Manchester Piccadilly, fees going up and up.

“Riders demanding respect from staff members. Police now present.”

The footage has since received dozens of likes and comments from social media users showing support for the delivery workers.

One user wrote: “Does feel like the easiest way to protest, everyone agree on a chain to avoid for a certain time frame and cycle it until something is done.

“The best way to piss off the apps is piss off the biggest customers.”

Another said: “Definitely boycott McDonald’s because they don’t want to give bottles or cans in the orders.”

A third added: “Already been pointed out, but if locally riders/drivers work together in union like this it will result in better fees offered by the app to deliver for corporation food chains all around like it used to.”
