Dopey driving duo both have cars seized by police after motorist – and the person who picked him up – hilariously park up outside station without insurance

A DOPEY driving duo have both had their cars seized outside an Edinburgh police station for having no insurance.

Police Scotland’s Road Policing team shared the drivers’ misfortune at Gayfield Police Station in the city centre to social media on Wednesday.

The driver of a blue BMW was attending the station for an unknown reason, but didn’t think officers would notice his lack of insurance.

After being found out though, their motor was seized and they phoned for a lift home – only for the Mercedes that arrived to also be clocked as uninsured.

The force’s gentle ribbing of the pair, aged 19 and 23, has attracted a host of responses from Scots online.

The blue BMW and silver Mercedes can be seen on the back of the same recovery vehicle, parked along the road from the station.

The driver of the BMW had contacted the Mercedes driver, presumably a friend or relative, to come to their aid.

However, in a hilarious twist, the Mercedes was also found to be uninsured, leading to both drivers being left without cars and facing potential consequences.

The snap was shared to social media on Wednesday with the caption: “Edinburgh Road Policing left in disbelief.

“The blue BMW driver had reason to visit a police station however his car had no insurance. First rule of being rescued is – make sure your rescuer has insurance.

“Second rule of being rescued is – you guessed it. Both cars seized.”

It has since received a slew of likes and comments from Scots sharing their views, not all positive.

One said, referring to an operation to crack down on uninsured drivers: “Great work and superb to see the partnership efforts we made on operation M8 carried on.”

Another commented: “What about noisy exhausts? How many have you seized so far?”

A third wrote: “Good work, high time the exec (sic) were pushing for legislation to just get these vehicles and those vehicles of driving impaired [by] drink/drugs retained and crushed.

“That’s the message that’s needed as a deterrent, including vehicles owned by another [person] unless genuinely stolen.”

Another said: “Unfortunately Edinburgh police would rather spend thousands of hours dealing with the aftermath of an accident than a few hours policing cyclists.”

A fifth added: “There’s an uninsured motorbike being ridden around Edinburgh Royal Infirmary at the moment. No number plate or helmet.

“The same thing that happens many times a day every day. Ask any staff member. How many more years of meetings, excuses, and accidents do you need?”

Speaking today, a spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “On Wednesday, 16 October 2024, two cars were seized outside Gayfield Police Station after the owners were found not to have insurance.

“Two men, aged 19 and 23 years, have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal for alleged road traffic offences.”
