Local council and reckless drivers slammed after three cars crash in three consecutive days in the same area

BRITS have hit out at a local council and reckless drivers after three cars crashed in separate incidents on three consecutive days in the same area.

The accidents occurred between Friday and Sunday in Catford, south-east London, all within half a mile of each other.

Although only involving single vehicles, they were all high-end cars which sustained significant damage.

Locals are now calling on Lewisham Council for safer spaces for walking and cycling in the area, as pedestrians and cyclists could have been seriously injured or killed as a result.

The incident on Friday involved a white BMW, which came off the road and crashed into a fireplace shop on Hither Green Lane.

Images show its front end completely mangled, the crumpled metal covered in police tape.

Debris from the car and the shop front can be seen on the pavement.

Ironically, a sign attached to a lamppost in the background gives the speed limit as 20mph.

It was shared to social media on Saturday with the caption: “A car smashed into shop in Hither Green, Catford last night. Pedestrians could have been killed.

“When will we have safe spaces for walking in Lewisham?”

On Saturday night, a grey Mercedes mounted a bollard on the other side of the same road and was stuck suspended above the pavement.

It was shared yesterday with the caption: “One day after a driver smashed into a shop on one side of the road, another driver does this: about 20 metres apart.

“When will we have safe spaces for walking and cycling in Lewisham?”

The third incident took place on Verdant Lane, less than half a mile from the first two.

Images show a blue Tesla rammed into the front window of a house, damaging both the building and the car.

The house’s window can be seen pushed out of the frame, with damaged brickwork underneath.

The car is crumpled at the front and along the driver’s side.

It was shared yesterday with the caption: “Third day, third crash. All within a few hundred metres of each other.

“This time a driver has ploughed straight into a house on Verdant Lane, Catford. When will this road danger be sorted out?”

The posts have since received over 340 likes and more than 55 comments from locals keen to share their views.

One wrote: “It’s the council and Transport for London’s job to engineer the roads so speeding isn’t possible but they don’t.

“They love putting up 20mph signs that are completely ignored and then pass the buck onto the police to enforce. Hither Green Lane is a perfect example of this.”

Another said: “They could pedestrianise the road outside the shop… oh.”

A third quipped: “High performance car. Low performance driver.”

Another commented: “20mph road. This isn’t an infrastructure issue; this is a driver issue.

“People will say this is evidence that we need even lower speed limits but the reality is that will slow everyone else down but allow these pellets to continue driving like wet wipes ignoring the rules.”

A fifth added: “Imagine sitting in the lounge watching TV when that hits the wall, frightening.”

Lewisham Council has been contacted for comment.
