Aberdeen Science Centre partnership set to bring digital skills workshops and activities this year

ABERDEEN Science Centre is set to deliver digital skills workshops and coding-related clubs over the next year.

With its Digital Futures Partnership with Equinor reaching its fifth year, Aberdeen Science Centre is set to deliver these clubs and workshops and will celebrate National Digital Learning Week over this weekend.

To celebrate the week, the science centre will host a range of digital-related activities that introduce visitors to coding, programming and a workshop on the digital world.

This is a yearly event created by Education Scotland, running from 11-17 May this year which hopes to encourage both students and teachers to welcome new digital education technologies.

A free day for these activites will be available the following weekend for chosen local community groups.

Lynda McConnach, public and digital programme coordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre stated: “We are honoured to continue our collaboration with Equinor through our Digital Future Partnership, as we work together to encourage our visitors to discover more about the digital world through fun sessions and activites.”

“National Digital Learning Week, which is now in its seventh year, is a true celebration of the modern ways of learning, and we are excited to introduce our special workshops and interactive floor stations that will allow our visitors to learn while they play.”

Aberdeen Science Centre hopes to engage over 300 students from Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire schools with digital technology workshops over National Digital Learning week.

Their partnership with Equinor involves support in managing and maintaining the centres robot, RoboThespian and support for the centres Coding Club and Junior Coders initiative.

This Coding Club is set to return later this year, it offers children from 6-12 a chance to discover robotics and coding through multiple sessions over the summer.

Arne Gürtner, senior vice president upstream at Equinor UK said: “We are proud to work in partnership with the Aberdeen Science Centre to build interest and new capabilities in STEM.”

He added: “Digitalisation is increasingly important both for society and for the energy industry to safely transition to a low carbon future.”

“As we continue our journey to net zero, encouraging an early interest in STEM subjects is vital, and exposure to new technology and innovation for young people will be crucial as we work to decarbonise our sector.”

“Our aim is to build future understanding of digitalisation and innovation as a core part of this, so we are delighted to continue as Digital Futures Partner of Aberdeen Science Centre.”
