Terrifying moment dashcam captures “wrecking ball” wiping out car with two women inside

THIS is the terrifying moment a “wrecking ball” comes loose and wipes out a moving car on a busy road.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening on the Shore Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland and saw the giant ball appear from seemingly nowhere, smashing into the front of the car.

The chaos was astonishingly captured in full on dashcam as the motor crumpled under the impact, and the pair were left screaming in terror.

The footage shows the two women driving along the Shore Road, which has been overrun with roadworks, with the left lane of the road completely closed off.

The two women were reportedly uninjured.
The two women were reportedly uninjured.

The work comes as a result of gas company Phoenix Energy, who are currently carrying out reinforcement of their network on the Shore Road.

The women comment on the roadworks as they go, mentioning the speed of the workmen who are carrying them out.

The two pass a bridge and are mid-conversation when a piece of heavy equipment – supposedly a giant rubber device used to test pressure in pipes – is launched into the air from behind the road barriers.

The ball heads straight for the car, and a split-second later, smashes into the motor’s windscreen, completely shattering the glass and the front end.

The women are immediately sent into a frenzy and scream in terror as the camera’s screen turns black and chaos erupts.

One woman screams in sheer panic as her pal tries to reassure her, repeatedly shouting: “You’re okay, you’re okay.”

Miraculously, no one was injured in the incident despite one of the women seemingly screaming in pain amid the ball’s destruction.

It’s not known what caused the construction equipment to fly into the road, though it appears to have come loose from its anchoring.

The harrowing footage was shared to social media yesterday with the caption: “Wrecking ball straight through the window of a car on the Shore Road.

“Must have only happened as its not on the news yet. Crazy.”

The clip has since received over 1,000 likes and more than 90 comments from users left stunned by what they saw.

One user said: “How the hell has it become detached from what was holding it?”

Another added: “This is one of those things used to test water pressure. It’s basically a huge sink stopper.”

A third wrote: “final destination levels of bad luck.”

Another replied: “You think you have seen it all. Then…”

Speaking today, a spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: “Police received a report of an incident in the vicinity of the Shore Road, Newtownabbey on the morning of Tuesday 12 March when a car was struck by an object.

“One vehicle was damaged, and no one was injured.”

A spokesperson for Phoenix Energy also said: “We are aware of an incident which occurred whereby a car passing a Phoenix Energy construction project on the Shore Road on Tuesday 12 March was damaged by a piece of rubber testing equipment.

“Such equipment is in common use in such projects.

“The construction work is being carried out by our primary contractor and we know their representatives have been in contact with the driver and the passenger.

“While those in the car were understandably shaken, we understand that they were not injured.

“We are now carrying out an urgent investigation with our contractor and the manufacturer of the equipment to understand the full context of this incident.

“The Health and Safety Executive NI has been informed of this incident by Phoenix and as always we will fully cooperate with all relevant authorities.”
