Dentists embark on group’s innovative training programme

Exciting career development opportunity for early clinicians

SCOTLAND’S leading dental group has launched its newly established dentist development programme, designed specifically to enhance the knowledge and skills of its early career dentists.

Clyde Munro has invited a number of clinicians from across Scotland, and who have qualified in the last five years, to participate in this unique programme.

The year-long Flying Start Programme – which launched in September – will see 30 dental clinicians receiving expert training from some of the biggest names in dentistry, providing them with learning and development opportunities across a wide range of topics.

Split into modules, the programme will cover management of tooth wear, dental trauma, digital dentistry, communication skills, as well as sustainability within dentistry and personal goal setting. The course will also feature talks from key opinion leaders such as esteemed dental coach, Ashley Latter, and experts from the multinational oral healthcare company, Haleon.

Dental practitioner at Clyde Munro’s Torwood Dental Practice, Dr Yvonne Goodall BDS, is one of the dentists who will be participating in the programme. Having graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2020 and completing her vocational training shortly after, Yvonne started at Torwood in August of this year.

Yvonne said: “I was delighted when Clyde Munro reached out to me about the Flying Start Programme. I’m keen to learn and always eager to take the opportunity to do so – I believe it’s important to step out of your comfort zone in order to grow.

“I’m particularly looking forward to learning more about composite bonding and the practical management of tooth-wear. Composite bonding is becoming extremely popular in the days of social media, while the management of tooth-wear is important as 90% of the population grind their teeth at some point in their lives, so are key dentistry topics that are good to have in-depth knowledge on.

“I am also really keen to improve upon my communication skills, for which there is a dedicated module in the programme. Good communication is a fundamental element that is relevant in all aspects of dentistry and vital when interacting with patients and members of your team.

“I think the Flying Start Programme is a great initiative for dentists who are early on in their careers and contains a really good mix of topics that will help us to develop as clinicians. I am really looking forward to sinking my teeth into it!”

The clinicians involved in the programme will come together at a central location within Scotland allowing an exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences from practice. Throughout the course they will also receive additional online support.

Training and Development Manager for Clyde Munro, Suzanne McLean, stated: “Our goal is to set Clyde Munro apart as a dental group, placing training and development of its clinicians at the centre of what we do, allowing them to deliver care of the highest standard.

“We recognise the challenges that clinicians face in their first few years and we want to equip them with knowledge and skills that will enhance their practice, and of course, as a group, it brings the benefit of having clinicians that are satisfied in their career.”

This latest education programme follows Clyde Munro’s dental nurse training course, the Strive Programme, which is now on its third cohort. This programme acts as an adjunct to its core dental nursing training and has been a real success with over 30 dental nurses now fully qualified who have filled nursing vacancies across the growing group.

The Scottish dental group continues to invest in its people and training facilities and is due to open a state-of-the-art Advanced Dentistry and Clinical Skills Centre in Perth City Centre, which is due to open in early 2023, bringing advanced training to clinicians and staff from across Scotland.

Clyde Munro operates 77 practices throughout Scotland, with more than 250 dentists and caring for more than 600,000 patients annually.

The group has grown rapidly since being founded with seven practices by Jim Hall in 2015 and earlier this year, secured a £25 million cash injection from Investec to fund further expansion plans.
