SHOCKING video shows the aftermath of an elderly couple’s horror smash after they crashed on their way to buy essentials during the coronavirus pandemic.
The incident, which took place in the early hours of yesterday morning [17 Mar], left the pensioners “medically and physically trapped”.
The couple had apparently been on their way to their local Tesco in Moreton, Merseyside when their vehicle flipped over, forcing emergency crews to cut them free using hydraulic equipment.
Pictures and video of the crash were onto Facebook by Jonathon Edwards yesterday.
He shared the distressing images with the caption: “As you wake up this morning take a thought for others will you.
“An elderly pair crashed outside ours this morning at 4:30AM. Thank God they got cut out and were alive.
“They have said they were on their way to the shop. So while all you greedy b******* are safe and got what you need x100, this is just an example of what is happening in this horrible country.”
The images and video Jonathon uploaded show the elderly couple’s red Suzuki on its side with parts of the vehicle strewn around the road.
The car’s roof has been completely removed and is seen laying beside the vehicle.
In another picture, a fire and rescue team can also be seen gathering around the Suzuki as they cut the elderly couple free from the wreckage.
Goods have since been left outside at the site of the crash including flowers and toilet roll.
The scene prompted an outpouring of sympathy on social media.
Christine Taylor said: “This is sad to think the elderly are getting up so early to go shopping because they are panicking there’s going to be nothing left.
“I hope this has opened the eyes of all people that’s overbuying what they are doing to everyone especially to our elderly this is the result. Hope the elderly couple are okay.”
Karen Oppenheim commented: “Omg! Heart breaking – hope they both have a speedy recovery.”
Dereck Jones posted: “Being forced to come out at stupid o’clock in the morning because of greedy selfish p****, boils my p**.”
And Charlotte Louise said: “So sad! People need to stop being so selfish and think of the elderly! Really gets on my nerves, hope the people are okay.”
A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police today said: “Just before 5am, we were called to reports of a Suzuki Swift car with two elderly occupants inside hitting a wall outside ASMA Turkish Restaurant in Hoylake Road.
“The two people in the car were taken by ambulance to hospital, where the elderly male remains in a serious condition.
“The road was closed for a short time but has now been reopened.

A spokewoman for Merseyside Fire & Rescue today added: “Firefighters attended a one-vehicle collision on Hoylake Road in Moreton on Tuesday, 17th March.
“Crews were alerted at 4.55am and on scene at 5.00am. Two fire engines attended as well as the search and rescue appliance.
“On arrival, crews found a car on its side.
“Two people were medically and physically trapped in the car.
“Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to carry out a roof removal on the vehicle, allowing the casualties to be removed using a longboard and scoop.
“The people were then handed into the care of North West Ambulance Service and taken to hospital for further checks.”
This crash comes after widespread panic buying has seen queues starting outside supermarkets in the early hours of the morning.
Costco in Watford saw queues extending out into a main road before the store had even opened its doors.
A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service today said: “We were called at 04:51 to Hoylake Road and attended with two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle to reports of a road traffic collision.
“Two elderly patients were taken to hospital.”
