Hungry cormorant struggles to down an enormous fish supper

A STUNNING sequence of photographs show the moment a sea bird battles to swallow its fish supper.

The black and brown cormorant is seen emerging from the water clutching a huge flounder in its beak as it tries to wriggle the fish into position to eat it.

The hungry bird is seen holding the fish before maneuvering it into position.

The sand coloured flat fish appears to be almost too large for the sea bird to swallow as one snap shows the flounder stuck in the cormorants throat.

Amateur wildlife photographer Harry Spence snapped the caught shots at the Eden Estuary nature reserve in Guardbridge, Fife.

The 54 year-old firefighter said: “At that particular time of the tide height they tend to fish quite often near or in front of the hide.

“It’s quite common to get them nearly every day at some point.”

According to the RSPB website, the cormorants beak has evolved to make them expert fishers.

Their website read: “Their bills are thick and hooked at the tip, helping to grasp fish, which they catch by diving under water.”
