Burnley manager Sean Dyche has refused to rule out re-signing Joey Barton after admitting that the former Rangers midfielder is back training with the Turf Moor outfit.
The 34-year-old is looking for a new club after his two-year contract at Ibrox was terminated earlier this month having initially been suspended following a training ground bust-up with team-mate Andy Halliday.
The former Manchester City and Newcastle United midfielder was Burnley’s player of the year last season in a campaign that saw the Clarets clinch the Championship title, but opted for a new challenge north of the border with Rangers during the summer.
Barton cannot sign for another club until January and Dyche has left the door open for the experienced midfielder to rejoin Burnley.
Dyche, speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, said: “He is and he’s been training with us for a number of days now. Not with the first team, he’s doing background fitness work with the sports science team.
“That’s an ongoing thing until things change in the future.
“He’s just enjoying being back in and getting himself fit. He was generally fit of course but he’s just topping up.
“He’d had an indifferent time with being away from the club and different things going on in Scotland, it’s about getting him fit and sharp.
“That’s good for him, who knows about us, we’ll take that on when I see fit.”
