DAVE Mackay admits he is thankful he can rely on a trio of top-flight bosses to help ease his transition in to management with Stirling Albion.

The 36-year-old was appointed as the Binos new boss this week after announcing his retirement from playing with St Johnstone in September.

The former Dundee and Livingston defender makes his debut in the dugout on Saturday afternoon when the Forthbank outfit travel to face second-top Elgin City.

And, as he settles into his new responsibilities, he is comforted by the knowledge he can tap into the experience of some of his former bosses as he bids for managerial success.

He told Capital City Press: “I’m delighted to have been given the chance to go into management and I see a lot of potential at Stirling Albion.

“I put my name in for the job on the off-chance of getting it a few weeks ago and I did that because it is a well-run club and a club that’s under-achieving at the minute.

“Thankfully they saw something in me to give me the job. It wasn’t that long ago that I hung up my boots but I’m excited by this new challenge.

“I know it’s not going to be easy but I’ve spoken to a few managers already who are more than willing to help out.

“Tommy Wright at St Johnstone is obviously one and then there’s Derek McInnes at Aberdeen and Paul Hartley at Dundee, as well as a few others at top-level clubs.

“Whether it’s with loan players or just having a chat it’s great to know I’ll be able to fall back on their help and that they’ll be there at the end of a phone for me.”

Mackay enjoyed a watching brief at Stirling’s training session on Thursday night but will be in the dugout at Borough Briggs as he seeks to steer Stirling to just their second league win in nine outings.

He added: “It’s a very tough start. Jim Weir has done a terrific job up there, his team scores a lot of goals and by all accounts are attractive to watch.

“But we’ve got an idea of the team already and hopefully we can get a positive result.”
