England striker Harry Kane looks set to win his battle to be fit for next Friday’s showdown with Scotland, even though Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino does not want his player to be involved.
The marksman has returned to training with Spurs after being sidelined with an ankle injury that he picked up during the 1-0 victory over Sunderland on September 18.
Kane, who started England’s opening World Cup Group F qualifying win in Slovakia, is set to return to the Tottenham squad for Sunday’s North London derby against Arsenal.
But Pochettino is hoping interim England boss Gareth Southgate omits the 23-year-old from the squad for the eagerly-awaited Auld Enemy clash at Wembley and his absence would come as a boost to Scotland.
Pochettino said: “He is available for Sunday, the doctor said to us that he can be available.
“We are always pro national team for all the players and if Harry is available, we’re not stupid to say no, ‘Harry out’, we try to protect him.
“We need to understand we want the best for the team and the player.
“It is true it is maybe more sensible for the national team to say, ’stay at home, stay at Tottenham and train for two weeks, it’s important to build Harry’s fitness and to be better after’.
“But if they consider that they need Harry to play for the national team and he is available to play against Arsenal, we can’t not stop it.”
Kane has scored five goals in 17 appearances for England and netted a staggering 32 times in 64 matches for club and country last season.
