Ex-Rangers & Hearts keeper Scott Gallacher knows St Mirren win could impress new boss

SCOTT Gallacher knows the new St Mirren manager could be watching on today (Saturday) – but insists the Buddies are determined to stop the rot for themselves.

The Paisley outfit are in the midst of seeking a successor to Alex Rae following the decision to sack him as boss a fortnight ago with the team sitting bottom of the Championship.

Youth coach Allan McManus has stepped in as caretaker but despite a spirited display they still went down to a 4-3 defeat to Dunfermline last weekend.

St Mirren Park

Like that clash, this evening’s home encounter with Falkirk is live on BBC Alba, giving any prospective new gaffers the chance to assess the squad they might be taking over.

But, insisting the players are firmly in the dark over who will be coming into the dugout, Gallacher is adamant the Buddies will not make a special effort – because they are already trying their best to turn things around.

The former Rangers and Hearts keeper told Capital City Press: “We get shaded away from the manager scenario, we’re not really kept in the loop.

“All we can do is get on with it – turn up on Saturday and try our best and look forward to the game ahead.

“If there is a new manager coming in then you’ve got to impress no matter what, that’s a big factor.

“But training has been at a good standard, it’s not as if anything like that is slipping. It’s just unfortunate that the results on a Saturday are not showing that.

“But that will change because we’ve got a good enough team.

“We’re a close-knit bunch of lads and I know results aren’t going our way at the minute but we’ll continue to work as hard as we possibly can.

“And I’m sure we’ll get a win down the line.”

BALANCE

After a seemingly impressive summer recruitment drive, St Mirren were tipped to be pushing for promotion this season but have failed to win any of their opening seven league games.

Rock bottom of the table and two points behind Dumbarton in ninth, the Buddies are already 10 points adrift of Raith Rovers who currently occupy the final play-off place.

However, Gallacher, who joined on a 12-month deal in the summer, firmly believes their fortunes must turn soon.

He added: “It’s strange. We’ve got a good balance as well, a mixture of experience, good young boys who are getting the experience of playing in the first-team and players in between.

“It’s not as if there has been any fall-outs or anything like that. Everyone sticks together and there’s a real togetherness about the team.

“That’s a big factor, especially when results aren’t going your way.

“It’s got to change at some point and hopefully it’s this weekend.”
