Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong admits he needs to make the most of his chances to impress manager Brendan Rodgers.

The 24-year-old made his first start since the first game of the Premiership season at Hearts in Wednesday’s hard-fought Betfred Cup 2-0 victory over Alloa.

The former Dundee United playmaker lasted the full tie as Celtic progressed to the semi-finals with late goals from James Forrest and Moussa Dembele, and Armstrong hopes his contribution has given Rodgers food for thought.

stuartarmstrongSpeaking to BT Sports, he said: “Of course there is competition and there is always going to be competition at a club like Celtic.

“You need to take opportunities when they come but it’s about the team and we came out with a win against Alloa, so I’m happy.

“We had lots of possession and moved it side to side but they were really organised and defended really well. We had a lot of chances in the first 45 minutes but we kept at them.

“We’re going to have teams like that that sit in, defend well and are very organised.

“We have to not let ourselves become frustrated, and be patient – wait for the openings and take our chances when they come.”
