STEVEN Thompson has rubbished Mark Warburton’s claims there is no ‘major gulf’ between Rangers and Celtic.

Instead, the former Ibrox striker believes Celtic ‘outclassed’ and ’embarrassed’ his old club at the weekend.

Despite seeing his side finish on the wrong end of a 5-1 thumping at Parkhead, Warburton played down the difference between the sides on Saturday.

Celtic Park

“It’s game five of a long season,” the Rangers boss said. “We don’t see a major gulf. We just got beat 5-1.”

However, that was dismissed by a critical Thompson.

He said: “I think he’s wrong. At this moment in time there is a big gulf between the sides.

“Rangers had a couple of spells in the game where they were okay.

“But Celtic outclassed them and ultimately embarrassed them in the end.”

SCHOOLBOY

Thompson was especially critical of the defending that allowed hat-trick hero Moussa Dembele to open the scoring for Celtic with a free header, just minutes after being left all alone at another corner.

The 37-year-old former Dundee United and St Mirren striker has questioned the role of both the management and the players in allowing Celtic to romp to their stunning victory.

He added to the BBC: “The warning was the first (corner) and the second one is schoolboy defending, really.

“It can be managed from the pitch as well, whether it’s a goalkeeper or an experienced centre-half.

“Whenever there is a spare-man situation in games you are usually told about it quite quickly.”
