Stirling Albion goalkeeper Chris Smith admits he has managed to avoid a serious neck injury after suffering a sickening fall on Saturday.

The experienced shot-stopper was left unconcious after landing awkwardly in the dying stages of the 4-0 Betfred Cup defeat at St Johnstone.

Smith was taken off on a stretcher before being rushed to Perth Royal Infirmary for checks.

But the 30-year-old was discharged on Saturday evening after being told by doctors that he had suffered no significant damage.

(Pic: James Stewart)Smith, who is a police officer in the east end of Glasgow, is set to miss this evening’s IRN-BRU Cup visit of Hearts Under-20s but the former St Mirren and Dunfermline player hopes he is not out of action for too long.

He said: “I can’t really remember anything about it. I just remember waking up in the ambulance going to the hospital.

“I wasn’t sent for any scans at the hospital, they seemed pretty happy with me and I was discharged later on Saturday.

“I was still a bit groggy over the weekend and there was a little bit of pain. I’m going to go to the game against Hearts and I’ll speak to the doctor and take it from there.

“I’ve been in the game for about 13 years and had a few concussions but that was the worst.

“The police have been really supportive as well, I was meant to be working nightshift on Saturday and Sunday but obviously I wasn’t able to make that.”
