Rangers’ David Weir the inspiration as East Fife boss Gary Naysmith plays on

GARY Naysmith has revealed he is being inspired by former Scotland team-mate David Weir after deciding to play on with East Fife.

The Bayview player-manager will turn 38 in November but has no plans to hang up his boots.

The former Hearts and Everton full-back made 33 appearances as the Fifers won League Two last season and his impressive performances saw him voted into the division’s team of the year.

And the defender, who won 46 caps for Scotland, has cited Weir’s ability to keep playing with Rangers until he was 41 as his encouragement to stave off retirement.

Talking to Ladbrokes News as he accepted the League Two manager of the year award, Naysmith said: “I’ll be the first to know when it’s time to hang up the boots.

“I feel good, I feel fit. Last season was the first in my career that I went through without having an injury.

“I try to look after myself like a full-time player and, while I still can play, I take inspiration from people like David Weir, who was still playing for Rangers at 40 and had played 60 games in a season at that age.

“So, if he can do it at that level, then hopefully I can do it at a lesser level.”
