Hearts chasing highest points tally in a decade

Hearts head coach Robbie Neilson will lead his team into the final three matches of the season knowing they can rack up their biggest top-flight points total in a decade.

The Tynecastle outfit are currently on 60 points in an impressive first season back in the Premiership following a solitary campaign in the second tier.

Since splitting the Old Firm in the 2006 season with a side that amassed 74 points, the most the Gorgie club have achieved since then is 63, which came in the 2010/11 campaign.

heartsVictory at home to Ross County on Saturday would equal the tally set by the management team of Jim Jefferies and Billy Brown five years ago.

Neilson’s side would then have a further two matches against Aberdeen and St Johnstone to set a new high for the last ten years.

Former club captain Neilson, meanwhile, admits he is only planning to make as many as four new signings this summer as Hearts prepare for a return to Europa League football.

A striker remains the priority with loan recruit Abi Dauda set to return to Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem, while a goalkeeper is also likely to arrive to compensate for Jack Hamilton being farmed out.

Neilson said: “We want to add quality, so we won’t sign too many. We have a decent squad here so three or four, at the very most, is all we need to bring in.”

Speaking to the Edinburgh Evening News, he added: “It all depends what’s out there. We want to strengthen every area of the team.

“It’s important that, whoever comes in, is better than the ones leaving or the ones already here.

“I’ve got ideas of exactly where I want to strengthen, so that’s where we’ll target and then we’ll see what else we can pick up.”
