Mark Kerr aims to be role model for Falkirk after signing new deal

Mark Kerr aims to provide Falkirk’s youngsters with a role model after penning a 12-month contract extension.

The 33-year-old follows striker John Baird and manager Peter Houston in agreeing fresh terms, ensuring he will spend at least another season with the Bairns.

The midfielder began his career at the club and, following spells with the likes of Dundee United, Aberdeen and Queen of the South, Kerr insists he sees no reason for him to end his second stint at Falkirk.

And the Scotland B cap, described by Houston as a ‘model professional’, is hopeful of passing on some of the knowledge he has gained in a senior career dating back to 1998.

He said: “I’m delighted (to sign a new contract). I feel good just now. I’m playing pretty decent, I feel fit and strong, I feel like a main player in the team, and it’s just good to continue that and stay at Falkirk.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else, it’s worked out really well for me.

“I try my best, I try to do things right, and I think I’ve learned from some good guys; good managers, good players and good pros.

“I’ve picked up good habits along the way and I’ve been fortunate to play in good teams and at good clubs, where that’s expected of you.

“I think that’s the same at Falkirk. Hopefully boys pick up on that and it can give them an extra five or 10 per cent to their game, and they can go on and have a good career as well.”

Annoying

Kerr was frustrated at the weekend, however, after Falkirk dropped two points in their 1-1 draw away to Livingston.

The Bairns relinquished second spot to Hibernian and Kerr confesses the result was not what they wanted ahead of tomorrow’s Scottish Cup tie with Dundee and Saturday’s crucial league encounter with leaders Rangers at Ibrox.

He added: “It’s so frustrating, because you know these are the games that can hurt you further on in the season. We worked hard enough and we did okay at times, but it just wasn’t good enough.

“On Tuesday night there’s no pressure on us but it’s a game we look forward to. It’s the Scottish Cup again, but it would have been great to have got the week off to a good start with a win.

“We had this at the start of December when we knew we had a big month and we started it off with a win. Then we had a couple of right good results.

“But we’ll look forward to Tuesday now and go up there with no pressure on us, and then go away to Ibrox on Saturday.

“It’s annoying and frustrating but it’ll be put behind us and we’ll be ready to go again.
