Queen of the South star Kyle Jacobs admits he is out for revenge against Dumbarton after the Sons ended their Scottish Cup dream.
It will be deja vu as the sides cross swords for the second time in seven days this afternoon, with Stevie Aitken’s men registering a hard-fought 2-1 triumph in the cup last Saturday.
That loss has seen Queens’ focus this season turn solely to their bid to secure a playoff spot – as they attempt to make up the two points between themselves and Raith Rovers in fourth place.
And Jacobs is determined to turn the tables on Dumbarton and start building momentum for the second half of the season.
The former Livingston stalwart told Capital City Press: “It was really disappointing to go out of the cup to a team in the same league as us, but this allows us an immediate chance to get the win and a bit of revenge.
“We obviously wanted to do well in the cup, but all of our focus has to be on the league campaign now.
“The aim from the start of the season was always to get in the top four and Raith Rovers losing to Alloa in midweek has given the lads a bit of a boost.
“We are only two points behind Raith, which makes this a massive game for us. Their slip-up won’t mean anything if we can’t do the business ourselves.”
Queens’ last league outing was a comfortable 2-0 win over Livi, while upcoming games against Dumbarton and Alloa appear very winnable on paper.
And Jacobs hopes that the Dumfries outfit can finally hit their stride after a stop-start campaign which has not seen them register more than two consecutive wins all season.
He continued: “It is a huge month for us and a great opportunity to build momentum and really stake that claim for the playoffs.
“Our league form has been a wee bit patchy and the gaffer [James Fowler] has already said we need consistency, yet we are still within touching distance of fourth.
“We need to take confidence from the fact that there is so much more to come from the team, and hopefully that shows later in the season.”
