SPRING has sprung, and with it come some of the city’s freshest events – from Balkan-themed fun to a film screening street party, check out the list below for events this week.

Kids BALKANARAMA featuring Edinburgh-based band Och Vey 

Date: Sunday, March 23 

Time: 14:30 – 16:30 
Location: The Out of the Blue Drill Hall, 36 Dalmeny Street, EH6 8RG 

The child-friendly version of the much-loved annual Balkan celebration is coming to The Out of the Blue Drill Hall this weekend. To celebrate imminent warmer and longer days, the hall on Dalmeny Street will be filled with live performers, fire spinners, belly dancers and circus acts. “Anarcho-klezmer” band Och Vey will be performing their modern twist on traditional Eastern European folk music, klezmer.

Street Screening on Scottish Folklore 

Date: Saturday, 22 March 

Time: 19:00 – 20:30 

Location: West Crosscauseway, Newington, EH8, 9JW 

Beetroots Collective, who provide participatory art projects working with underrepresented, diverse communities in Scotland, will be hosting a free street projection event this weekend. The evening of storytelling, art, and video will centre on the theme of Scottish folklore and is suitable for all ages. An animation made by migrants and local residents will be shown alongside an outdoor exhibition.

The Big Street Art Drop In 

Date: Saturday, 22 March 

Time: 14:00 – 17:00 

Location: Scot-ART (formerly known as Edinburgh Palette), Studio G6, 151 London Road, EH7 6AE 

ArtyFarty Art is hosting a whole day of creativity, where budding young artists can get the chance to express their street art skills on an indoor canvas. Open to seasoned artists and complete beginners, participants can scrawl on walls, t-shirts, poster boards and more. Cutouts, tags, and stencils will be available, alongside the chance to meet and connect with other painters.

March Community Meal at the Edinburgh Student Housing Co-operative 

Date: Friday, 21 March 

Time: 19:30 – 21:30 

Location: Edinburgh Student Housing Co-operative Basement, 34 Wright’s Houses, EH10 4HR 

The student co-operative’s monthly community meal is tonight, as volunteers are teaming up to bring visitors delicious home cooked food and great company. The event is free and open to all, and food is served on a first come first served basis. Those planning on attending are encouraged to RSVP so that interest can be gauged. Vegan and gluten free options are available, and the venue is wheelchair accessible. If you can’t make it, join them next time on the third Friday of every month.

Soapbox: The Story Sessions 

Date: Friday, March 28 

Time: 18:00 – 20:00 

Location: Tribe Porty, 19 Windsor Place, EH15 2AJ 

Soapbox for Creatives are hosting another popular story sessions event, this time on the theme of birthdays. To celebrate fresh starts and celebrate their birthday, they are offering a space for voices to be listened to. For those who would like to tell a story at the event, an outline can be sent to [email protected] along with any questions. There are both free tickets and pay-what-you-can tickets available.

RSA New Contemporaries 2025 

Date: 22 March – 16 April 

Time: 10am-5pm, Sun 12-5pm 

Location: Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, EH2 2EL 

The RSA is presenting a new exhibition opening this Saturday, highlighting the incredible work of 63 Scottish art graduates. With work selected from the 2024 degree shows, the exhibition offers an overview of the current outlook of emerging art and architecture, in one single large-scale exhibition. Tickets are £8 or £5 concession and are free for RSA Friends.
