Bin lorry smashes car in Portobello before leaving the scene without leaving note

A BIN lorry smashed into a car in Portobello before leaving the scene without finding the owner or leaving a note on the damaged vehicle.

Darren Craik’s motor was the victim of seemingly unintended damage, being battered by a bin lorry doing the rounds yesterday.

Darren’s car was left with a massive scratch along its rear side, a gouge in the paint and deep dents in the body work.

The scratch on the car stretches from the rear taillight to the back door with paint entirely stripped away from the body panel.

Whilst the bin lorry to blame duly fled without stopping or providing any details – whether intentionally or not – the incident was thankfully captured on a doorbell camera.

Darren subsequently launched an appeal to find the bin lorry involved, asking on social media for any witnesses or CCTV.

Shockingly, at least one other local appears to have been a victim of the dodgy lorry driver, with another car reportedly being hit in Portobello.

Posting an appeal online yesterday, Darren said: “Was looking for help from the group. We know at 8:30am-ish, [a] private bin lorry hit my car and didn’t leave a note.

“It’s parked next to St Andrews chippy. Was hopeful that someone may have CCTV or dashcam footage.

“If anyone has CCTV looking on Hope Lane North or any CCTV on Portobello High Street, if you can check for the bin lorry would be fab (sic).”

The post received over 30 likes and comments from social media users eager to help.

One user wrote: “There was another car hit in Portobello today I read on here and the Butterscotch Cafe had the [registration number], not sure if it’s connected.”

Another replied: “Bin lorries have CCTV, and the council will know which one was there, get in touch with them.”

Speaking today Darren Craik said: “Still waiting on insurance costing but looking like it could be a few thousand pounds.

“It happens more disappointed they didn’t leave a note.”
