A TEAM at the University of Edinburgh have created an AI-powered robot that can brew cups of coffee.

A study has said that the robot built by the team could “usher in the next generation of intelligent machines”.

The robot uses AI, sensors and fine-tuned motor skills to make cups of coffee in a busy kitchen environment.

Researchers have said that the robot can interact with its surroundings in more human-like ways than ever before.

Previously robots struggled to operate in changing environments like kitchens, relying on preprogrammed actions.

The new bot designed by the team at Edinburgh University, however, can better adapt to dynamic environments because of AI and its sensors.

The robot consists of a mechanical arm with movable joints and can interpret vocal instructions and analyse its surroundings.

The team’s research was published in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence and was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

The work was led by Ruaridh Mon-Williams, a PhD student jointly at the University of Edinburgh, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University.

Ruaridh said: “We are glimpsing a future where robots with increasingly advanced intelligence become commonplace.

“Human intelligence stems from the integration of reasoning, movement and perception, yet AI and robotics have often advanced separately.

“Our work demonstrates the power of combining these approaches and underscores the growing need to discuss their societal implications.”
